I just don't buy the 'they're in the public spotlight so it's okay to apply a different standard to them' argument. What kind of message does having unrealistic and frankly hypocritical expectations of people send to the 'young people' people always claim to be so worried about? If it is not okay to judge and denounce and condemn someone in your church for falling into weakness and personal sin, why is it okay to cast stones at more visible people?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8266815053157932248.post-84677468911012024402010-02-04T11:57:06.901+00:002010-02-04T11:57:06.901+00:00Sorry, I don't agree. The difference between his public image as 'Dad of the Year' and what has happened in private is naturally going to attract tabloid interest as it smacks of hypocrisy. Marriages can and do recover from any number of awful sins and mistakes, but this is unlikely when people unconnected with the marriage and with no stake in seeing it succeed seek to take glee in the failure. And as you say, there are far more important things to focus on. When people are dying either because of our leaders' decisions or the poverty that made an entire country unable to cope with disaster, to be obsessed with a glorified reality-soap plotline is perverse.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8266815053157932248.post-75303026565102316692009-10-24T11:41:29.931+01:002009-10-24T11:41:29.931+01:00I'm one of those who doesn't think QT was ...I'm one of those who doesn't think QT was the right forum. I think it gave the BNP what they really wanted, a seat alongside serious politicians on a serious political discussion show, as though they were somehow now included in the political mainstream.

Yes, the BBC would be right to find some forum in which the views of hte BNP and Griffin himself were given the right and fair time and space to be explored, challenged and answers sought. This format gave reason for him to smirk, to dodge and ultimatley pervert the normal course of the show to it becoming all about him.

Now, I think his performance was so poor that it may well show some people what he really his, a hollow and little man, but it also gave the air of publicity in an unnecessary way.

I've blogged about my response on http://www.tooktheredpill.blogspot.com/

Grace and peace.
JonathanJonathanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12511575294809131898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8266815053157932248.post-24907744043573443562009-10-24T08:49:08.183+01:002009-10-24T08:49:08.183+01:00I agree. However, to his core support, Griffin looked as if he was picked-on by the so-called 'liberal establishment'.

Should Griffin should have been on QT? Yes. It's not the BBC that have given Griffin credibility, it is the voters who sent him to Brussels. Was QT fair? I think so. If he had any nouse at all (evidence suggests not) Griffin should have seen this coming. London is the most ethnically diverse city on the planet so what did he expect? An able politician with confidence in his views should be able to air them anywhere.

For what it's worth, I believe the immigration debate, like the debate over Europe, is not happening for a simple reason: the truth is not particularly palatable to much of the electorate. In terms of immigration, the UK's population is ageing - there are already more pensioners than children - and eventually there won't be enough younger people to look after/provide for the older ones. You can't *force* people to reproduce (ironic chuckle) so immigration is really the only answer.
Government incompetence over headcounts and tabloid myth-stoking haven't helped.Mike Rigbynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8266815053157932248.post-86405027916136718412009-10-23T14:32:27.601+01:002009-10-23T14:32:27.601+01:00I thought it was fascinating, but not entirely sat...I thought it was fascinating, but not entirely satisfying for reasons I'm still trying to ascertain. The questions were undoubtedly the questions the audience wanted addressed and the BNP has become something of a story in itself in recent weeks because of this prog. So the audience members were part of the story. The single question about different issues (Stephen Gately) felt slightly out of place, but in fairness to Mr Griffin, I felt he ought to have been given more opportunity (along with other panel members) to get beyond the introspective. Giving publicity to this man and his views is unpleasant, but there is a clear support for at least some of his ideas out there and in that respect we need to hear them discussed more fully. Unshakable faith in Markets, privatisation and a negative and superior attitude towards the working class and foreigners -- these have been Labour's major failings. So sad, from a party that gave us free health-care and a society in which the poor need not starve.

But turning to the Tories is essentially choosing the worst of New Labour rather than an alternative. It would all have been worse under the Tories and it will get worse if they win. I pray, fervently, that they will not. And, for good measure, that The Sun and Mr Murdoch will, with this election, begin to lose its inordinate influence on our society and world.
Maybe then there might be room for a true democracy, with which ordinary people would be more inspired to engage.

Most important, though, Christians need to vote in the election, and vote for the party with most concern for the poor.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8266815053157932248.post-78722197222705190692009-08-20T15:26:05.288+01:002009-08-20T15:26:05.288+01:00Fascinating stuff, Doobs. This was usually all well and good as far as eye-candy and interesting things to look at from the booth went, but one night some silly girl brought in a large python. She had either not considered that snakes have a strong sense of vibration or didn't care and the poor thing was freaking out. Despite its obvious fear and discomfort, as the door-lady and I sat trying to soothe it with gentle stroking and good vibes(which worked to an extent, it didn't bite anyone. Swine flu has been overblown (mostly by the media), but it's now high in the public consciousness and as such, any organisation catering in some way for large numbers of people needs to demonstrate it's taking it seriously. Perhaps it's gone too far into the popular understanding, but we all have to live with the world we have, not the world we could like to have.

So churches (along with schools, hotels, etc) need to show they are able to take appropriate practical action to mitigate against the risks.

There is another practical step we can all take, and that is to pray. We can choose what we pray about. Swine flu will be on my prayer list if people close to be are infected, but even then, there are possibly other priorities I will pray about first.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8266815053157932248.post-40137355620054382322009-07-30T17:38:08.385+01:002009-07-30T17:38:08.385+01:00ssAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8266815053157932248.post-45887694827523775352009-07-30T09:40:28.842+01:002009-07-30T09:40:28.842+01:00I guess the issue is that even if most of us only ...I guess the issue is that even if most of us only get a mild dose, we may pass it on to someone else who might have a nastier, even fatal, response.

The fewer people that catch it, the fewer people that can pass it on.

Even in the midst of such huge numbers getting the virus, the effort to limit its spread is one worth making.

Good to see you blogging, hope to read more.

Grace and epace
JonathanJonathanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12511575294809131898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8266815053157932248.post-75503721477180721512009-07-30T08:57:32.279+01:002009-07-30T08:57:32.279+01:00Its been officially a pandemic since around 14th J...Its been officially a pandemic since around 14th June.
